Carotid duplex is two mirrored sets of vessels and many velocities. Mixing up a side or CCA with ICA while typing is easy. Dictate by side and the service assigns the vessels and calculates the velocity ratio.

How to pick this exam type

Pick Carotid duplex. Velocities in cm/s, diameters and IMT in millimetres, stenoses in percent.

How to dictate

Right: CCA diameter, IMT, velocity; ICA diameter, velocity, stenosis; vertebral artery diameter, velocity. Then left and the same order. Describe plaques with location, structure and percent stenosis.

What to watch

The ICA to CCA ratio is calculated from peak velocities for each side.
Say the stenosis as a number with the word percent, it goes to its own field.
IMT needs a decimal: zero point eight. The number 8 will not be placed into IMT.
Describe a plaque in one phrase: location, structure, surface, stenosis.

What is calculated automatically

Right ICA/CCA PSV ratio = 0.8
ica_psv_r / cca_psv_r; ratio > 2 suggests ICA stenosis of 50% or more
Left ICA/CCA PSV ratio = 0.9
ica_psv_l / cca_psv_l; ratio > 2 suggests ICA stenosis of 50% or more
